On November 19th 1991, Manchester United hosted Red Star Belgrade in the European Super Cup. It was meant to be two legs, between the European Cup winners, Red Star and the winners of the now dissolved European Cup Winners Cup, United.
Due to the political unrest in Yugoslavia at the time, UEFA decided to change it to a one off game at Old Trafford.
Judging by the attendance, 22,110, it wasn’t treated with much enthusiasm. However, it provided me with the greatest single footballing performance I have ever witnessed by Dejan Savicevic.
United won 1-0 with a scruffy goal from Brian McClair.
Here are some highlights of Savicevic from that night.
